One of the most beloved heirloom tomatoes ever grown — the Cherokee Purple Tomato is a Tennessee heirloom with a history stretching back over 100 years. Its deep dusky-rose skin, rich burgundy interior, and complex, smoky-sweet flavor make it a true garden legend.
- 4-6 inch tall plant in a 3-inch pot, ready for transplanting into your garden, raised bed, or container
- Produces large, beefsteak-style tomatoes with stunning purple-red skin and dark, jewel-toned flesh
- Exceptionally rich, complex flavor — smoky, sweet, and deeply savory all at once
- Indeterminate variety — continues producing all season long
- A showstopper at farmers markets and a must-grow for heirloom tomato lovers
🌵 Growing in the Desert Southwest?
Cherokee Purple tomatoes can produce beautifully in SW New Mexico with a few key adjustments for the desert climate:
- Transplant after last frost (mid-April in most of SW NM) when nights stay above 50°F
- Mulch generously to retain soil moisture and keep roots cool during intense summer heat
- Water deeply and consistently — drip irrigation is ideal for arid desert conditions
- Provide afternoon shade cloth during peak summer heat (above 95°F) — especially important for large-fruited heirlooms to prevent blossom drop
- Stake or cage early — these indeterminate plants grow tall and need strong support
- Amend sandy desert soils generously with compost for the best flavor and fruit size
Imagine slicing into a Cherokee Purple fresh from your desert garden — that deep, dusky color and rich, complex flavor is unlike anything you’ll find at a store. Grow a piece of heirloom history this season.
